The calendar chose these, not a hunch
Every opening-round match is on the official list. Five of them carry a confirmed first: a first top-flight game in 25 years, a first league match after Guardiola, a first Premier League match for a new Liverpool head coach, a first league match for a new Chelsea manager, a play-off winner's first home night back.
That is why these five, and not a ranking of who is 'biggest'.
Arsenal v Coventry City — Friday 21 August, 20:00, Sky Sports
The season starts here. Champions against the Championship winners, at the Emirates.
Arsenal have already lifted one piece of August silverware: they beat Manchester City 3–0 in the Community Shield on 16 August. That is a curtain-raiser, not a league table. Coventry's fact is simpler and heavier — 25 years out of the top flight, now opening against the champions.
Hull City v Manchester United — Saturday 22 August, 12:30, TNT Sports
Hull came up through the play-offs. The Premier League made their home game against Manchester United the first Saturday lunchtime match of the season.
United's manager situation is a longer story than this briefing. What is confirmed for this weekend is the fixture, the time and the broadcaster.
Manchester City v AFC Bournemouth — Sunday 23 August, 14:00, Sky Sports
City's first home league match without Pep Guardiola. Enzo Maresca, appointed on 29 June on a three-year contract, has already had one competitive afternoon: the Community Shield defeat.
Bournemouth also begin under a new head coach, Marco Rose. Two new benches, one published kick-off. That is the story. Not a projection of where either club finishes.
Newcastle United v Liverpool — Sunday 23 August, 16:30, Sky Sports
Liverpool appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach on 4 June, succeeding Arne Slot. The club's own announcement is the source for that, not a rumour column.
His first Premier League match is away at St James' Park. Whatever systems either side intend to play, they have not played this fixture yet.
Fulham v Chelsea — Monday 24 August, 20:00, Sky Sports
The opening round ends in west London. Chelsea appointed Xabi Alonso as manager on a four-year contract, to begin on 1 July 2026. Fulham appointed Álvaro Arbeloa as head coach on 7 July.
A Monday-night derby between two new coaches is interesting because both appointments are official, not because anyone here has seen their league XI.
The other five still exist
Everton v Palace, Ipswich v Sunderland, Forest v Leeds, Brentford v Tottenham and Brighton v Villa are also Matchweek 1. They are on the same official list. This page is not a claim that they do not matter.
No scores, no lineups, no 'players to watch' invented to pad a list. When the matches are played, the results go on the match pages.
