The appointment

On 4 June 2026 Liverpool FC said Andoni Iraola had agreed to become the club's new head coach for 2026–27, succeeding Arne Slot.

The club's own news page is the source. Liverpool said Iraola arrived after three Premier League seasons at AFC Bournemouth, and that he led Bournemouth into Europe for the first time with a sixth-placed finish.

What the club said about his path

Liverpool's announcement sketched the career it was hiring. Iraola, then 43, made more than 500 appearances for Athletic Club over 12 seasons, mainly as a right-back, and won seven caps for Spain. He finished his playing days at New York City FC.

His first managerial job, the club said, was AEK Larnaca in 2018. Then Mirandés, then Rayo Vallecano — whom he led to promotion to La Liga in his first season — and then Bournemouth.

The club staff page later summarised those Bournemouth seasons as consecutive finishes of 12th, ninth and sixth.

What he said on the club site

Iraola told Liverpoolfc.com he was “really excited”, and that Liverpool is “a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world.” He talked about the atmosphere, the supporters and “the chance to fight for titles.”

That is a first-day quote on the club website. It is not a tactical plan and it is not a guarantee.

The first league match

Iraola's first Premier League match as Liverpool head coach is away at Newcastle United on Sunday 23 August, 16:30 BST, live on Sky Sports.

That fixture is on the official opening-round list released by the Premier League. It has not been played. There is no result, no lineup and no post-match to write.

What this page leaves out

It does not reconstruct last season beyond what Liverpool stated about Bournemouth. It does not list summer incomings or outgoings — those belong on the transfer tracker only when a club confirms them.

The draft title asked whether Liverpool can challenge again. That is a question for May. In August the confirmed facts are a new head coach, a public first interview, and a Sunday trip to Newcastle.
